Job Summary

Underwrite new or existing loans in a portfolio primarily of commercial real estate, commercial and industrial lines of credit, term facilities, multifamily, mixed-use, non-profit, and loans to houses of worship. Independently assess complex credit issues, analyze risk, and review financial statements, tax returns, rent rolls, and cash flow projections. Engage in client meetings or calls with the lending team to assess borrower credit. Conduct site visits as necessary to prepare site visit reports in accordance with lending procedures and assist with annual reviews of existing loans. Carver Bancorp, Inc. serves middle-income and underserved communities in New York City through eight branches in Brooklyn, Queens, and Manhattan, offering commercial real estate and small business loans alongside complementary banking products.

Required Qualifications

  • Strong Underwriting skills set and ability to understand and communicate credit issues
  • Independently assess complex credit issues and analyze risk
  • Proficiency and experience in analyzing financial statements and reviewing overall credit quality
  • Review financial statements, tax returns, rent rolls and cash flow projections
  • Underwrite loan extensions and renewal requests as needed
  • Conduct site visits as necessary and prepare site visit reports for loans in the portfolio in accordance with lending procedures
  • Assist with annual review of existing loans as needed
  • Ability to underwrite and monitor commercial and industrial loans, lines of credit, term facilities, as well as owner occupied mortgages, multi-family and mixed- use loans, small business loans, non-profit loans as well as loans to houses of worship
  • In-depth knowledge of credit quality and credit analysis
  • Proficient in analyzing financial statements of commercial real estate, multi-family and business operations
  • Ability to interact with borrowers, attorneys, accountants, appraisers and any other external professionals as required
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, relationship management, and business development skills, working with both private sector financial institutions and public agencies
  • Familiar with federal, state, and local government funding sources for capital and operating needs of multi-family housing, commercial real estate
  • College Degree
  • 5+ years of experience in underwriting and analyzing commercial real estate and business loans
  • Well-developed analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Strong verbal and written skills
  • Knowledge of bank products and services
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office products
