Job Summary
Operate traveling or stationary overhead cranes (cab- or ground controlled) to lift, move, and position loads using hoisting attachments like hooks, slings, electromagnets, or buckets. Observe load hook-ups to determine safety, manipulate controls to regulate speed and direction per instructions, and clean or inspect the crane for defects. May attach loads prior to operation or serve as a designated hooker or hooktender depending on material handled. Comply with all safety rules, wear required personal protective equipment, and report unsafe conditions or participate in safety briefings and hazard analyses. Works under minimum supervision following established guidelines.
Required Qualifications
- May require a high school diploma or its equivalent
- Previous years of experience in the field or in a related area
- Knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field
- Capable of certifying on forklifts
- Capable of certifying on ariel lifts
- Capable of certifying on lulls
- Specializes in overhead crane
- Operates traveling or stationary overhead crane (cab- or ground controlled)
- Uses hoisting attachments, such as hook, sling, electromagnet, or bucket
- Observes load hook-up and determines safety of load
- Manipulates or depresses crane controls, such as pedals, levers, and buttons
- Regulates speed and direction of crane and hoist movement according to written, verbal, or signal instructions
- Cleans and maintains crane and hoisting mechanism
- Inspects crane for defective parts
- Notifies supervisor of defects or malfunctions
- Attaches load to hook or other crane accessory prior to operating crane
- Designated Crane Operator-Hooker (steel & rel.) or Crane Operator-Hooktender (aircraft mfg.)
- Designated Bridge Crane Operator (any industry)
- Designated Charging-Crane Operator (foundry; steel & rel.)
- Designated Cinder Crane Operator (foundry; steel & rel.)
- Designated Gantry Crane Operator (any industry)
- Designated Hot-Metal Crane Operator (foundry; nonfer. metal; steel & rel.)
- Designated Ingot Stripper (steel & rel.)
- Designated Scrap Crane Operator (steel & rel.)
- Designated Tower Whirler Operator (any industry)
- Designated Wall-Crane Operator (foundry)
- Observes and complies with all safety and project rules
- Wears required personal safety equipment
- Performs only those jobs on which they have been trained and/or authorized
- Works in accordance with safe job practices
- Complies with company safety rules
- Uses required personal protective equipment
- Reports unsafe conditions or practices
- Makes safety suggestions
- Serves on the safety committee if requested
- Cooperates during investigation of any accidents that occur
- Takes an active part and participates in safety meetings
