Job Summary

Draft, review, and negotiate policy forms and endorsements across management liability and specialty coverages, including D&O, EPL, Cyber/Tech, and Professional Liability. Advise underwriters, product managers, and business partners on coverage interpretation, surplus lines, regulatory compliance, and product development while identifying and assessing risks in unique or complex business situations. Create risk management and mitigation recommendations, lead complex and strategic matters, and build creative solutions to issues with no established precedent. Collaborate with the Reinsurance and Alternative Risk Transfer group and interact with persons outside the company on behalf of the organization.

Required Qualifications

  • JD from an American Bar Association-accredited law school
  • Fully licensed in accordance with OCLO policy, in good standing and in compliance with all continuing legal education requirements at all times in the state(s) in which they practice
  • Six or more years of relevant legal experience
  • Demonstrated business knowledge
  • Proven experience with or knowledge of an area of law, complex legal practices and procedures
  • Considered a specialist on a specific product, service or legal specialty (employment, finance, regulatory, real estate, securities, tax, etc.)
  • Sound business knowledge with respect to area of legal support
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Skilled at interpreting statutes, regulations, insurance policies and other contracts
  • Decision-making ability to set work priorities and make recommendations
  • Ability to initiate, prioritize and coordinate complex projects and/or cases that cross functional or business lines
  • Takes the lead role in complex and/or strategic negotiations
  • Supervisory skills helpful, as this role may have the opportunity to supervise a small group of legal resources within an area of law
  • Regularly and consistently demonstrates the Nationwide Values
  • Valid credit and/or background check

  • Substantive experience in management liability or specialty insurance coverage law
  • Thrive in a fast-paced, product development-driven environment
  • Comfortable serving as a trusted legal advisor to sophisticated business partners across multiple lines of business simultaneously
  • Supervisory skills helpful, as this role may have the opportunity to supervise a small group of legal resources within an area of law
