Job Summary
Join the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative as Counsel, AI & Technology embedded with AI, product, and science teams to provide day-to-day legal partnership on IP, data use, licensing, and AI policy. Advise on copyright, trademarks, open source, licensing of AI models, datasets, and software; review use, access, and licensing agreements for AI training and development; monitor AI and scientific-research policy developments; help create templates, guidance, and playbooks to support scalable approaches to AI, product development, and IP across CZ ecosystems. Requires JD and active bar membership (CA preferred), a STEM degree, at least 8 years of relevant experience in product counseling/tech/IP, ability to translate complex legal concepts for technical audiences, and willingness to travel occasionally. Compensation includes a base pay range of $241,000-$331,100, discretionary bonus eligibility, and relocation support. The role is hybrid, onsite ~60% of the time (about 3 days a week) at Redwood City, CA, with potential for in-person collaboration across the CZ ecosystem.
Required Qualifications
- JD and active membership in at least one U.S. state bar (CA preferred)
- Degree in STEM required (biology, chemistry, biochemistry, physics, computer science, or engineering)
- At least 8 years of relevant legal experience in product counseling, technology, and/or IP
- Experience advising on AI/ML systems, software products, or data-driven technologies
- Strong grounding in IP (copyright, licensing, open source)
- Ability to work closely with technical teams and provide clear guidance in fast-moving environments
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills
- Willingness to travel occasionally
