Job Summary
Book, interview, classify, and process adults in custody; conduct searches, monitor movement in housing units, and release individuals while returning property. Escort adults to events, courts, and medical care; supervise mealtimes, recreational activities, and work crews. Control violent or mentally ill adults, prepare daily counts and assignment sheets, and document behavior in reports. Respond to backup calls for medical emergencies and assaults; testify in court regarding crimes committed in custody. Maintain security within the institution, oversee health and safety, control access, and operate control rooms and security systems. Hold, aim, and discharge firearms with sufficient accuracy to maintain department qualifications. Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- A minimum of two years combined of full-time work/volunteer experience, military service and/or education
- A high school diploma or equivalent
- Must be at least 21 years of age
- Must be a United States citizen or able to obtain citizenship to attend the academy
- Must possess a valid driver's license by time of appointment
- Must pass a thorough background investigation which includes but not limited to a review of applicant's criminal, civil, driving, military, educational and employment history
- A score of 70% or higher on the REACT exam
- Certified in Oregon at time of hire (for lateral incentive qualification)
- Ability to obtain certification through the DPSST Career Officer Development (COD) program (for out-of-state lateral candidates)
Desired Qualifications
- Experience in public safety, social service, or security setting
- Ability to think clearly and perform effectively in stressful or emergency situations
- Possess good judgment, act appropriately and responsibly and have excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Current certification as a State of Oregon DPSST Corrections Deputy
- Experience in a command structure organization
- College level course work from an accredited institution
