Job Summary
Correctional Sergeant at Westville Correctional Facility in Indiana responsible for management, supervision, and safety of inmates, coworkers, and the public. Enforces IDOC policies and procedures, makes decisions on assignments, and ensures subordinate staff perform work to quality standards. May be the highest-ranking custody staff at times in a small facility. Duties include managing offender movements, escorting offenders to meals, work, and recreation, reviewing movements and rule violations, assisting in security operations, coordinating offender treatment needs, and ensuring emergency preparedness and response. Recruits, selects, trains, and develops staff; sets expectations, monitors progress, and provides feedback. Requires strong communication, critical thinking, delegation, and leadership abilities, and the ability to work overtime and travel as needed. Qualifications emphasize a high school diploma or equivalent and at least 6 months of relevant experience; valid driver's license and ability to pass drug screenings are required. Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma or High School Equivalency (HSE)
- 6 months of experience in corrections, law enforcement, or military law enforcement
- Must possess a valid drivers license
- Must test negative on all drug screenings
- Working knowledge of correctional environment procedures and safety
- Ability to supervise and obtain results from offenders and subordinate staff
- Ability to communicate effectively (oral and written) and give clear directions to offenders and staff
- Willingness to travel with reasonable accommodation
- Ability to work mandatory/voluntary overtime
- Completion of mandatory training including DOC Supervisory Training Program, First Aid, and CPR
