Job Summary
Facilitate operations of the NOAA Galveston Deep Sea Coral Laboratory's coral culture facility, including coral husbandry, systems maintenance, and supply inventory management. Conduct routine care of live coral specimens, monitor water quality, and maintain recirculating culture systems while responding to disease outbreaks. Lead or participate in experiments, prototype novel equipment, and conduct at-sea surveys for broodstock collection. Manage database records, write SOPs, and perform imagery analysis to determine coral growth. Prepare research manuscripts and presentations, and answer telephones for public outreach and facility tours. Requires a Master's degree in marine sciences with three years of coral culture experience, valid U.S. driver's license, and ability to work in environments near 40°F.
Required Qualifications
- Master's degree in marine sciences or related biology field
- at least 3 years of experience maintaining coral culture systems
- 5 years of experience maintaining coral culture systems
- prior saltwater aquaria/aquatic systems experience
- Knowledge of basic water quality
- aquaculture/mariculture knowledge
- animal husbandry concepts and methodologies
- capable of independently performing scientific tasks using established methods
- Knowledge of basic plumbing
- carpentry knowledge
- facility maintenance knowledge
- capable of following oral and written instructions for care of mesophotic and deep corals
- capable of recognizing animal behaviors on the job
- capable of writing college-level reports
- capable of making oral and written presentations
- valid U.S. driver's license
- ability to lift 50 lbs sacks of salt
- ability to work in environments maintained at or near 40°F
