Job Summary
Controller at The Lab School of Washington will lead accounting operations for a $30MM nonprofit with multiple revenue streams (private-pay tuition, jurisdictional funding, advancement, auxiliary programs, and facility rentals) and oversee TRG-related activities. The role prioritizes streamlining accounting workflows, owning the monthly close, ensuring timely financial reporting, and guiding the annual audit process while strengthening internal controls. The position requires partnering with department heads and program leaders to translate financial information into actionable guidance, leveraging technology and automation to improve manual workflows, and managing billing, receivables, and complex jurisdictional funding. On-site, full-time in Washington, DC, with a salary range of $130K-$160K and a comprehensive benefits package. The ideal candidate has a bachelor’s degree in accounting/finance and 8+ years of experience in a complex environment, along with strong expertise in GAAP, financial reporting, audits, system modernization, and cross-functional collaboration.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field
- 8+ years of progressive accounting experience in a complex operating environment with multiple revenue streams and significant reporting requirements
- Demonstrated ability to partner effectively with program leaders across the school community, translating financial information, controls, and accounting practices into clear, practical guidance that supports sound decision-making
- Strong experience with monthly close, audit preparation and coordination, financial reporting, reconciliations, and internal controls
- Demonstrated ability to modernize systems, improve processes, reduce manual workflows, and implement automation
