Construction Materials Testing Team Lead

Job Summary

Lead the construction materials inspection, testing, and laboratory group for projects in construction management, quality assurance, and special inspections. Recruit and hire staff, direct project assignments, and manage teams to ensure technical quality of deliverables while supporting business development and strategic planning. Serve as the primary interface with client representatives, regulatory agencies, and contractors, driving proposal preparation and market share growth in the local area. Manage financial, project management, backlog, and utilization reporting requirements while adhering to strict QA/QC standards and company policies. Work schedules may extend beyond the typical workweek with occasional travel required.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Geology or Business
  • 10+ years of industry experience
  • Experience managing teams
  • Experience managing projects
  • Sound knowledge of laboratory tests
  • Experience with field testing
  • Experience with special inspections
  • Ability to multi-task
  • Positive experience dealing directly with client representatives
  • Experience in proposal preparation
  • Strong MS Office skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to provide guidance and leadership to junior team or project members
  • Strict adherence to QA/QC
  • Developed critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to apply technical knowledge to reach conclusions from testing results
  • Ability to perform data collation
  • Ability to perform statistical analysis
  • Ability to arrive at the most effective, economical, and logical solution
  • Ability to uphold workplace safety
  • Ability to abide by WSP's health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies
  • Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek
  • Occasional travel
  • Must successfully complete and pass WSP's Motor Vehicle screening
  • Must be subject to random drug/alcohol tests

Desired Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Geology or Business, is preferred
  • Knowledge on AMRL and CCRL Laboratory Accreditations
  • PE desired but not required
  • Local presence and contacts in the Raleigh-Durham construction market
