Job Summary
Construction Inspector applied to heavy highway, road, and bridge construction and maintenance projects. Responsible for monitoring contractors, ensuring quality control, and verifying contract compliance. Duties include material testing and inspections, taking field measurements, reading and interpreting plans and contract documents for structures, bridges, and roadways, inspecting work to ensure proper construction, documenting pay quantities and daily activities, interfacing with contractor personnel, advising on violations and adjustments, reviewing lines, grades, and elevations with survey equipment, inspecting erosion and sediment control and BMP installations, overseeing roadway traffic control and work-zone safety, maintaining project records, and ensuring compliance with DBE/EEO and federal labor requirements. Requires strong communication, ethical conduct, initiative, time management, and adaptability to field conditions; work may involve travel and site-based work.
Required Qualifications
- Three (3) years of highway construction inspection experience
- Knowledge of Roadway, structure and bridge construction/maintenance/repair/rehabilitation methods, materials, standards and specifications
- Familiarity with VDOT Road and Bridge Specifications and Standards, Construction Manual, MUTCD
- Understanding of environmental, safety, and Equal Employment Opportunity guidelines and regulations (federal/state)
- Experience with contract management software including Site Manager, PlanGrid and/or AWP
- Proficiency in mathematics including algebra, geometry, and trigonometry
- Ability to read and interpret roadway plans and specifications
- Ability to maintain detailed records and communicate effectively with client and contractor personnel
- Ability to perform and document materials testing and field inspections
- Proficiency with office software (Microsoft Office)

- Maintain daily diaries and project records
- Coordinate with contractor personnel and report status to Senior Inspector/Construction Manager
- Experience with environmental and safety compliance for Federal-aid construction projects
- Familiarity with DBE/EEO documentation and compliance
- Use of standard field-testing equipment and survey tools
