Construction Engineering Technician

Job Summary
Conduct construction and field observation to ensure project compliance with plans and specifications. Read and interpret construction documents, perform quality assurance reviews on surveying, staking, and line/grade checks, and conduct materials testing for soil, concrete, bituminous, and aggregate. Maintain logs of testing results, measure installed quantities, and write documentation for as-built drawings. Complete detailed construction reports using MS Office and management software, monitor contractor performance, and address design compliance issues. Perform submittal control reviews for billing. Requires 0-3 years experience, proficiency in MS Office, and ability to pass safety and industry certifications. Overnight travel up to 80% of the time is required; work hours can include 12-15 day shifts. Valid driver's license and ability to navigate difficult terrain are essential.
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- 2-year degree from technical school or college
- 0-3 years' construction, survey, and/or field observation experience
- Proficiency in MS Word
- Proficiency in MS Excel
- Ability to pass certifications
- Valid driver's license
- Good driving record
- Ability to pass a DOT FRA drug test
- Ability to pass all certification exams required of clients
- Ability to pass a pre-employment lifting test
- General knowledge of construction practices and methodology
- Working knowledge of surveying, staking procedures, checking line and grade and cross sections
- Understanding of testing procedures
- Ability and aptitude to interpret and understand plans and specifications
- Excellent communication skills (verbal and written)
- Good math skills (ability to: add, subtract, multiply, divide)
- Ability to calculate areas, distances, and volumes
- Strong organizational skills
- Self-Motivated and ability to work independently
- Good technical writing skills including ability to use appropriate grammar and proof read
- Effective human relations skills to build consensus, resolve conflict and confront/address design compliance issues with contractors

- Ability to use hands for carrying items, operating devices and/or equipment, and operating ATV vehicle
- Ability to lift/carry items (i.e. testing equipment, tools, etc.)
- Occasional maximum lift of 100 lbs. from floor to knuckle
- Occasional maximum lift of 100 lbs. floor to shoulder
- Occasional maximum lift 5 lbs. from shoulder to overhead
- Occasional maximum unilateral lift of 25 lbs. from waist to overhead
- Occasional maximum carry of 80 lbs., 50 feet
- Occasional maximum vertical pull force of 125 lbs.
- Occasional maximum grip force 90 lbs.
- Ability to confront design compliance issues with contractors when identified
- Ability to maintain log of materials testing results
- Ability to measure installed quantities, track and report on installed products
- Ability to write documentation for as-built drawings when adjustments are made to design
- Ability to complete detailed construction reports using MS Word, MS Excel and construction management software systems
- Ability to monitor performance of contractors
- Ability to perform submittal control reviews for billing client(s)
- Ability to perform general and advanced construction and field observation
- Ability to read and interpret construction plans and specifications for quality assurance during construction process
- Ability to conduct materials testing following prescribed procedures on soil, concrete, bituminous, and aggregate materials
- Ability to calculate areas, distances and volumes
- Proficiency in MS Office and technical software with ability to learn CPM and Newforma software programs
- Ability to pass all required certifications and maintain those certifications throughout employment

- 2-year degree from technical school or college
