Job Summary
Perform conservation work including examination, assessment, treatment, and documentation of objects while preparing them for exhibition. Maintain gallery and storage environments, manage condition reports, and advise on climate control, packing, and display methods. Conduct research, co-organize workshops and symposia, and contribute to public conservation education projects. Develop and review guidelines for collection care, assist in emergency planning, and maintain the conservation studio. Collaborate with curators, registrars, and external stakeholders to ensure proper care of loans and museum safety. Provide training to staff and manage conservation budgets. Required Qualifications
- Master's degree in conservation or conservation science or similar training programmes from a recognized college or university
- Equivalent credentials such as certificates from a recognized conservation training programme
- At least 5 years of verifiable museum conservation experience (or equivalent)
- Broad range of expert knowledge of and hands-on experience with the techniques, materials, and equipment used in the conservation and scientific research of museum objects and Chinese art or archaeological objects
- Knowledge of the procedures and best practices relating to the examination and preventative and remedial conservation of museum art objects
- Knowledge of the environmental and handling requirements for storage, exhibition and travel of objects
- Extensive experience with exhibition related conservation matters
- Proven track record of professional accomplishments in the field of conservation and scientific research that may include publication, conference papers, and research projects
- Good communication skills
- Proficiency in English
Desired Qualifications
- Experience of acting as a trainer
- Experience with public conservation education
- Good understanding of museum collection management and associated softwares, such as Collection Management System, The Museum System (TMS)
- Strong team-player with excellent organizational, and diplomatic/negotiation skills
- Meticulous attention to details and accuracy
- Ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines and manage multiple complex projects concurrently
- Local and international network in the field of conservation and scientific research
- Experience with Hong Kong and/or Mainland Chinese, or International institutions and collections
- Proficiency in Cantonese and/or Putonghua
