Job Summary
Provide strategic legal advice on major capital projects, infrastructure initiatives, and procurement activities across Rio Tinto's global operations. Draft, review, and negotiate complex construction and procurement agreements, including EPC/EPCM, design-build, and alliance contracts. Develop and standardize contract templates aligned with regional requirements in Québec, Canada, the United States, and Latin America. Support project and procurement teams in identifying, assessing, and mitigating legal, commercial, and operational risks. Advise on claims, disputes resolution, and litigation strategy while managing external counsel. Partner with global stakeholders to deliver practical, business-focused legal solutions in complex environments. Demonstrate visible leadership in health, safety, environment, and community matters, ensuring these considerations remain central to all contractual arrangements and commercial decisions.
Required Qualifications
- Member of the Barreau du Québec
- 7 to 10 years of experience (in-house or in a large law firm)
- Significant experience in major capital and construction projects, including engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning, and project delivery
- Proven expertise in drafting, negotiating, and administering complex commercial and construction agreements (EPC/EPCM and related contracts)
- Experience advising on contract administration, claims, disputes, and risk management
- Experience supporting procurement and sourcing activities, including tendering processes, supplier negotiations, contract award strategies, supplier relationship management, and procurement-related risk assessment
- Strong technical and analytical skills, with a proven ability to develop proactive and practical solutions to complex commercial and legal issues
- Experience supporting cross-border projects and transactions involving multiple jurisdictions
- Availability to travel to project sites and operations as required to support the business across Canada, the United States, and South America
- Fluency in French and English, both written and spoken
