Job Summary
Assist the Train Engineer with moving rail equipment within the rail yard safely and efficiently, managing track switches to direct cars to appropriate tracks. Maintain an orderly yard by freeing tracks for incoming traffic, connecting and disconnecting rail air hoses, and inspecting all equipment for damage. Lead job briefings with supervisors and crew, ensuring compliance with HAZMAT and OSHA regulations while reporting incidents immediately. Maintain clear communication via verbal, hand, or radio signals and participate in daily safety briefings. Wear required PPE including safety vest, glasses, hearing protection, and toe boots. Work in an ambient outdoor environment with varying weather conditions, traveling by walking or driving throughout the yard and transfer station.
Required Qualifications
- valid driver's license
- advanced knowledge of the railroad industry from vocational education, apprenticeship, on-the-job training, or similar experience
- ability to pass a vision and hearing test
- excellent written and verbal communication skills
- ability to work in an environment which can be hazardous at times
- physical ability to see and hear fast-moving equipment
- physical ability to move so that you can remain safe always
- ability to travel throughout the yard and the transfer station either by walking and/or driving
