Job Summary

Inspect, maintain, and repair rolling stock and locomotives by conducting air brake tests, lubricating moving parts, painting, and rerailing equipment using blocking and cables. Diagnose component malfunctions, assemble parts for diesel engines and air compressors, and prepare necessary reports for car and locomotive repairs. Operate transport vehicles, cranes, and shop equipment while adhering to Federal Railroad Administration regulations and safety procedures. Work scheduled hours including overtime, holidays, nights, and weekends in outdoor conditions exposed to weather, noise, and hazardous materials.

Required Qualifications

  • High school graduate or equivalent
  • Current and valid driver's license
  • Ability to be insurable under IAIS's commercial auto policy
  • Mechanical Aptitude: Demonstrated ability to understand and apply mechanical principles to diagnose, maintain, and repair equipment
  • Communication Skills: Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, including understanding and following written instructions, technical drawings, blueprints, and verbal directions, and seeking clarification when needed
  • Rules and Regulatory Compliance: Ability to read, understand, and comply with the General Code of Operating Rules, Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) regulations, and all applicable company, federal, state, and local requirements
  • Relationship Building: Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with coworkers, management, vendors, and contractors
  • Decision-Making Skills: Ability to make sound decisions and adapt effectively to unfamiliar situations, changing priorities, interruptions, and operational challenges
  • Problem Solving and Judgment: Ability to accept responsibility, resolve issues effectively, and exercise independent judgment when making decisions
  • Constant (67-100%) stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, eye hand coordination, reaching, standing, walking, grasping, talking and hearing
  • Frequent (34-66%) pushing, pulling, climbing up to 20 ft., balancing, overhead work, repetitive motion, and viewing close visual work and/or distances
  • Frequent lifting up to 50 pounds
  • Occasional (10-33%) sitting, traveling and lifting up to 100 pounds
  • At least 20/40 in each eye with or without glasses
  • Average hearing threshold (in the better ear) of 40 decibels at 500 HZ, 1000 HZ and 2000 HZ aided or unaided
  • Ability to recognize and distinguish colors with no more than four (4) errors in a sixteen (16) plate isochromatic test
  • Must possess a CDL
