Job Summary
Community Services Internship at the International Institute of New England (IINE) supports newly arrived refugees, asylees, and immigrants by assisting the Case Specialists with case management, helping clients access social services, coordinating referrals, conducting cultural/workforce orientation workshops, and handling front-office administrative tasks. Interns check in with clients by phone, assist with temporary financial assistance applications, advocate for health and social services, help secure housing, accompany clients to appointments, and maintain client records. Location is Boston, MA; Lowell, MA; and Manchester, NH. This unpaid internship aligns with US semester systems and requires a commitment of 12–16 hours per week depending on site; the role reports to the Senior Contracts & Program Manager. Learning objectives include developing advocacy and people skills, understanding immigrant and refugee integration work, and gaining exposure to resettlement programs.
Required Qualifications
- Interest in international, refugee, asylee, and/or immigrant issues
- Patience speaking with non-native English speakers/non-English speakers
- Experience interacting with social welfare agencies highly desirable
- Experience advocating on behalf of others
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Highly organized with great attention to detail
- Ability to handle multiple tasks and to switch gears quickly
- Professionalism, discretion, and maturity in dealing with confidential information
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint
- Language skills in Arabic, French, Spanish, or Somali preferred
- Comfort navigating the Boston area on public transit
- Driver’s license and/or car highly desirable
