Job Summary
Community Service Officer responsible for planning, directing, coordinating and participating in parking enforcement, animal control, minor civil and traffic control services and code enforcement in Brookings. Works primarily Monday–Friday with potential for varied shifts, weekends and holidays. Coordinates staffing for the Community Service Unit, advises supervisor, conducts patrols, issues citations, handles animal care and shelter duties, enforces housing/zoning codes, educates the public, maintains records, and supervises part-time officers. Requires knowledge of municipal codes, animal control laws, licensing, and safety protocols; duties include interactions with residents, property owners, and other city departments; mandates include certifications in animal control, code enforcement, and CPR/First Aid, and U.S. citizenship with no sponsorship.
Required Qualifications
- Associate's degree in a law enforcement or animal related field or equivalent from an accredited college, university or technical school preferred, but may be substituted for applicable experience and/or training in code enforcement or related land use experience.
- Possession of a valid South Dakota Driver's License or ability to obtain one within forty-five days of appointment and an acceptable driving record.
- First Aid and CPR certification or ability to obtain certification within six months of appointment.
- Obtain Animal Control Officer I & II certification through the National Animal Care & Control Association within one year of employment.
- Obtain ICC/AACE Certified Code Enforcement Officer (CCEO) within one year of employment.
