Job Summary
Communications Officer duties include receiving complaint, emergency, service and information calls; dispatching police officers and necessary manpower; classifying calls for service; recording information onto logs or computer; relaying information between on-duty officers and other emergency providers; issuing visitor and overnight parking permits; creating and maintaining logs and tapes; monitoring equipment and performing related communications tasks. Strong written and verbal communication skills, ability to maintain high accuracy under pressure, familiarity with NCIC/VCIN and CAD systems, and experience in records and incident reporting are required. The role involves night shifts on a 8 pm–8 am, 2-2-3 schedule at UR Main Campus in Richmond, VA, within an office environment and requires interaction with university staff, facilities, and external contacts.
Required Qualifications
- H.S. Diploma or GED required
- Some experience as a communications officer preferred
- Clear and concise written and oral communications
- Demonstrates accuracy under pressure
- Knowledge of department policies/procedures and reporting forms
- Technical communication equipment such as NCIC/VCIN terminal, CAD terminal
- Operate office equipment (typewriter, telephone, printer, shredder, computer)
- Maintain logs and tapes
- Monitor and operate NCIC/VICN teletype terminals
- Prepare and distribute reports and forms
- Maintain sign-in/sign-out records of radios and keys
