Job Summary
Research and write content by interviewing students, alumni, faculty, and external subjects to tell compelling stories across long and short-form channels. Create and execute communications plans that manage messaging, audiences, and metrics for internal and external purposes, while maintaining the editorial calendar and overseeing the university's newsroom and social media platforms. Edit, amend, and proofread content for tone, style, and accuracy, and support the senior director in executing media relations, press releases, and reputation management by building relationships with reporters in the Twin Cities, Rochester, and Winona. Prepare proactive public relations statements and handle issues mitigation as assigned. On-call availability is required after hours and on weekends.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in English, communications, marketing, journalism, or related field
- Three to five years related experience
- Long- and short-form story writing experience
- Must be available on call, both after hours and on weekends (infrequent, need-based)
- The successful candidate must support, respect, and advance the mission of Saint Mary's University as a Lasallian Catholic institution
Desired Qualifications
- Knowledge of AP style
- Public and media relations experience
- Understanding of marketing principles
- Experience with employee/internal communications and managing newsletters
- Excellent writing, editing, proofreading, and verbal communication skills
- Strong service-orientation, organizational skills
- Communication planning background from development to execution
- Ability to prioritize, work under deadlines, results-orientation and desire to collaborate with numerous teams to ensure successful communication of desired message
- Knowledge and experience in writing content for multiple channels
- Able to fact-check and ensure content accuracy
- High ethical standards and deep respect for confidentiality when working with sensitive communications messaging
