Commissioned School Security Officer

Job Summary

Prevent unauthorized visitors from entering school buildings and loitering on school grounds while directing traffic before and after school. Provide armed security for all occupants of school buildings and grounds, oversee security inspections and assessments of school facilities, and monitor security issues to make recommendations for corrections. Inform counselors, parents, teachers, and administrators of student behavior issues and serve as a liaison with police, fire, and municipal departments. Assist administrators and staff in crisis and emergency situations, including fire drills and evacuations, and report suspected bullying, child endangerment, or neglect as required by law. Prepare reports, use automated systems for work assignments, and provide ongoing training to site-based staff in safety and security services.

Required Qualifications

  • Three (3) years of experience in law enforcement, security or a related field
  • Must be 21 years of age
  • Must be able to submit to and pass a drug test upon hiring and at request
  • Must pass a preliminary criminal background and child maltreatment check
  • Appropriate personal and professional conduct at all times while around students and other staff members
  • Must possess a valid driver's license
  • Must successfully pass a psychological exam upon employment and annually
  • Must be able to successfully complete sixty (60) hours of initial training, including a written exam, and pass an additional background check administered by the Arkansas State Police
  • Must meet all requirements to be a commissioned school security officer pursuant to Arkansas law (including, without limitation, Ark. Code Ann. 17-40-337)
  • Must furnish own firearm and ammunition that meets approved parameters set by the ESD
  • Proven experience working with security, and emergency medical services' systems, procedures, and protocols for organizational effectiveness
  • Comprehensive knowledge of state and local policies and procedures regarding the administration of security/school safety programs
  • Comprehensive knowledge of applicable laws and regulations
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the current literature, trends, methods, and developments in the areas of security and school safety
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the ethical guidelines applicable to the position as outlined by professional organizations and/or federal, state, and local laws, rules, and regulations
  • General knowledge of the principles of supervision, organization, and administration
  • Ability to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  • Ability to effectively present information to management, public groups, and/or boards
  • Ability to evaluate the effectiveness of programs and make recommendations for improvements
  • Ability to use common office machines and popular computer-driven word processing, spreadsheet, and file maintenance
  • Ability to maintain complete and accurate records and to develop meaningful reports from them
  • Ability to effectively express ideas orally and in writing
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments
  • Ability to understand how various systems and departments interact to achieve district goals
  • Ability to make decisions using data and technology
  • Ability to identify and prioritize mission-critical issues with alignment of people, time and resources
  • Ability to offer innovative solutions to seemingly intractable challenges
  • Ability to carry or lift items 75 lbs. or less

Desired Qualifications

  • An Associate's Degree in Criminal Justice or a related field is preferred or an acceptable level of equivalent experience or job knowledge
