Commercial Underwriter (South Wales and South West England)

Job Summary
Manage a portfolio of trade credit insurance policies across construction and other sectors in South Wales and South West England. Assess, price, and structure new and renewal business using claims ratio analysis and pricing models. Prepare renewal terms, negotiate with brokers and clients to support retention and premium targets, and resolve day-to-day policy and credit limit queries. Proactively identify new business opportunities with existing and uninsured prospects while maintaining accurate records of meetings and decisions. Liaise with Risk Underwriting, Sales, Claims, and administrative teams to ensure effective policy servicing.
Required Qualifications
- Level 3 qualifications (A Levels, CII Certificate etc) or equivalent professional experience
- Minimum of 3 years' experience in commercial underwriting, trade credit insurance or broking, including managing a portfolio and working with brokers or clients
- Strong understanding of trade credit insurance, including pricing, policy structures, risk assessment and portfolio management
- Commercially aware, with the ability to balance client needs, broker relationships, risk appetite and profitability
- Confident using Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, Outlook and Teams, with the ability to accurately maintain data and records
- Strong communication and relationship-management skills, with the ability to engage confidently with brokers, clients and internal stakeholders
- Highly organised, self-motivated and able to manage competing priorities while working independently
- Strong written communication skills and a good level of numeracy, with the ability to interpret data and make sound underwriting decisions
- A full UK driving licence with maximum 3 points, and ability to travel regularly across the region as required
Desired Qualifications
- Level 6 qualification (CII Advanced Diploma, Degree etc)
- Knowledge of the construction sector
- Knowledge of other specialist sectors relevant to trade credit insurance
- Export knowledge or experience supporting clients with international trade exposures
