Commercial Generator Field Technician (Gen Sets, LV/MV Electrical, Mechanical, Microgrid, Field Engineer)

Job Summary

Perform ongoing maintenance and repair of contracted and non-contracted generator and power distribution equipment, including engine diagnostics, fuel system priming, and battery installations. Provide technical support to customers on operational and maintenance aspects while communicating availability status to the corporate office. Travel independently with an 85% outdoor work environment and maintain company tools, vehicles, and proprietary documentation. Complete all required paperwork, including Field Service Reports and Time Sheets, and coordinate subcontractors as necessary. Provide 24x7 on-call services as required unless on PTO or Off Call.

Required Qualifications

  • Level II Technician
  • three years of field experience servicing generator systems
  • experience on 500kw+
  • proficient with preventative maintenance
  • retrofitting basic controls
  • minor ATS repairs
  • loadbanking equipment
  • High School diploma or GED equivalent
  • related military experience or equivalent field experience
  • Ability to perform triennial maintenance
  • engine diagnostics
  • fuel system priming
  • replacing failed engine components
  • Operational and functional understanding of Automatic Transfer Systems
  • troubleshoot and repair with minimal direction
  • Ability to read and decipher electronic schematics
  • troubleshoot discreet mechanical and electronic systems to the component level with guidance from our Product Support team
  • Experience with or ability to quickly learn advanced generator and electric system controls including Woodward, Beckwith, and PLC equipment in an advanced electric controls environment
  • Ability to read and interpret technical instructions, safety manuals and policies and procedures
  • Ability to work with basic mathematical concepts
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
  • Must observe all safety standards

  • Must be willing to travel out of market/state up to 25% of the time
  • Must be able to pass pre-employment screening that includes background check, drug testing and MVR clearance
  • Must be willing and able to attend training as company deems necessary
  • Own and maintain personal set of mechanical tools
  • Must have the physical ability to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including but not limited to Protective Glasses, Protective Gloves, and Protective Footwear as required
  • Specific vision abilities required: close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus
  • Must be able to read computer screens, paper documents, equipment
  • Ability to perceive and discriminate sounds, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals
  • Up to 10 consecutive hours driving heavy duty truck
  • Must be able to work long and unpredictable hours
  • Must be able to communicate orally and hear others speaking
  • Must be willing to work in an outdoor environment in all types of weather
  • Must be willing to work in varied environments since the performance of the essential duties is at customer sites
  • Must be willing to work in adverse environmental conditions such as temperature and noise extremes, vibrations, machinery, hazardous materials, confined spaces, traffic hazards, and various chemicals
  • Must be able to perform moderately physically demanding work
  • May involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-75 pounds)
  • Frequently required to stand, walk, and sit
  • Occasionally required to use hands, to finger, handle or feel, reach with hands and arms
  • Combination of climbing and balancing to include climbing ladders, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling

  • Ability to deal with customers where tact may be required to maintain continuing harmonious relationships
  • Computer fluent, with specific attention to ERP systems, email and Microsoft Office products
