Commercial Dockside Sampler/ Fishery Biologist I

Job Summary
Biologist I, Marine Science with a contract-eligible appointment. Responsible for collecting biological samples (primarily otoliths) from commercial fisheries catches and, upon request, recreational headboat catches, ensuring sampling aligns with 1% of total yearly catch and following TIP/SRHS protocols. Duties include data entry into TIPS or SRHS portals by the last day of the subsequent month, conducting monthly QA/QC audits, proofing data with 1–2 other collectors, and preparing/shipping cleaned, labeled samples within one week of collection and by the 30th of the month after proofing. Lab work locations include Gulf of Mexico/mackerel samples to Panama City Lab and South Atlantic samples to Beaufort Lab. If participating in SRHS, submit HARs weekly and monitor vessel eLogs; communicate with vessels on compliance. Assist FTE staff with sampling training, participate in public outreach events, and support training sessions. Desired experience includes training new hires, SEFSC outreach events, and attending protocol-update conferences. Requirements emphasize a MS in Marine Science or a BS with 3 years of relevant experience, fishery data collection knowledge, data-entry proficiency, and familiarity with sample handling and QA/QC practices. Onsite role focused in coastal SE US, primarily North Carolina, with contracted employment status.
Required Qualifications
- MS Degree in Marine Science or related field; OR BS Degree + 3 years relevant experience
- Knowledge of fish/related biological field sufficient to independently perform scientific tasks
- Proficient in use of fish, invertebrate, and protected species ID books and keys
- Computer literate; experienced with word processing, database, statistical, and graphics programs
- Data entry into TIPS and SRHS web portals
- Biological sample processing, packaging, and shipping
- Monthly QA/QC auditing in TIPS
