Job Summary
Conduct college readiness services and character development for high school students, including navigating the college system, financial aid, and SAT/ACT preparation. Provide tutorial support using the Socratic method to ensure academic success and readiness for state exams. Monitor student behavior during after-school programs, field trips, and workshops while establishing positive mentoring relationships. Follow up on test scores and character issues, and assist with program operations by contacting missing students, writing notes, and organizing supplies. Available for online advisement and tutorials. Work 8-10 hours per week at Alvarado High School.
Required Qualifications
- An associate's degree
- Previous experience providing college readiness services, tutoring or teaching
- Demonstrated academic excellence (high GPA)
- Knowledge of FAFSA, Apply Texas, and Scholarship applications
- Has a personal background as a first-generation college student or low-income student
- Demonstrated knowledge in use of the Socratic method for tutoring
- Previous TRIO experience
- Successful college experience beyond high school
- Reliable transportation to school sites
- Ability to coach behavior of youth
- Able to set strong professional boundaries with youth
- Strong interpersonal communication skills
- Patience and a strong desire to help students achieve their educational goals
- Must be able to lift and carry 40 lbs.
- Must be able to stand and walk for long periods of time
- Must be able to endure strong heat and cold
- Must be able to climb stairs
- Must be able to fly on airplane
- Must be able to project voice and speak publicly
- Must be able to drive a vehicle
- Must be able to read road signs
- Must be able to judge distance
- Must be able to spend extensive hours in front of a computer screen
- Must be able to listen carefully to others on the telephone
