Job Summary
Overview: Collections Manager for Archaeology at NHMLAC. Responsible for day-to-day care and processing of the archaeology collection, maintaining object records in the EMu database, conserving and organizing objects, supporting digitization projects, facilitating access for researchers and descendant communities, and training/supervising volunteers and students. Will assist with NAGPRA/CalNAGPRA records and transactions, collaborate with the Curator and other departments, and support public programs and education efforts. Must stay current with museum standards, regulations, and best practices in archaeology collections management, and navigate Indigenous perspectives and confidentiality in Native American-related work.
Required Qualifications
- Master's degree or bachelor’s degree with at least 5 years of collection experience in archaeology or related fields
- Familiarity with tribal nations of North America, particularly California, and ability to navigate collaboration, cultural sensitivity, and confidentiality
- Working knowledge of international, federal, and state regulations governing the collection and use of objects (NAGPRA, CalNAGPRA, UNESCO 1970 Convention)
- Knowledge of factors important to the management of archaeology collections, including California Native American histories and community standards
- Experience writing reports, grants, professional correspondence, and/or procedure manuals
- Experience presenting information to and responding to questions from managers, scientists, and the public
