Collections Associate I

Job Summary
Conduct daily collection operations for delinquent loans by serving as the first point of contact via phone, text, email, and mail to make payment arrangements and establish repayment plans. Provide financial education and counseling to members while managing skip-tracing, credit bureau dispute resolution, and garnishment or repossession cases. Maintain centralized collection queues, perform quality control audits on loan files, and prepare reports for management and the Board of Directors. Handle high-conflict conversations with members and vendors while ensuring confidentiality of all records. Work flexible hours as needed to support collection targets and assist with third-party collection activities.
Required Qualifications
- Knowledge of laws and regulations affecting lending and collections
- Knowledge of bankruptcy, repossessions, and third-party collections
- Knowledge of organization's policies/procedures and Credit Union's service philosophy
- Knowledge of the Credit Union's in-house computer system
- Knowledge of the Credit Union's products and services
- Knowledge of the legal, insurance, regulatory, economic, competitive, and technology environments that may affect the collections operation function
- A sighted person to read and interpret financial data
- Ability to communicate verbally and in writing with staff, members and vendors
- Ability to perform necessary computer-related input
- Moderate mobility required
- Ability to understand and follow complex written and oral instructions
- Ability to comprehend complex functions and procedures and to be able to disseminate that knowledge in a clear and understandable format to others
- Ability to express oneself, clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
- Ability to interact positively with co-workers, management, and the public to promote a team effort and maintain a positive attitude even under extreme pressure
- Ability to remain professional and calm during conversations for members who are in delinquent status
- Ability to provide financial education and World Class Member Service while collecting overdue payments from members
- Ability to think critically and provide recommendations for the member's financial well-being
- Ability to prepare and maintain confidential records and reports
- Ability to gather, assemble, correlate, and analyze facts and develop solutions
- Ability to analyze statistics and financial data
- High school level of language, math and reasoning skills
- Zero to two years' experience in a related field with equal responsibilities is acceptable
- Ability to independently manage the collections queue assignments and set deadlines
- Ability to collaborate with team members and cross-train where appropriate
- Ability to process third party payments
- Ability to process garnishments
- Ability to work on various reports with internal and external stakeholders
- Ability to process consumer credit counseling proposals and payments
- Elevated ability for high-conflict conversations with members and vendors
- Occasional travel to one of BHFCU's branch locations or attendance at community events may be required
- Ability to perform primarily sedentary work with limited physical exertion and occasional lifting of up to 10 lbs
- Must be capable of climbing / descending stairs in emergency situation
- Must be able to operate routine office equipment including telephone, copier, facsimile, and calculator
- Must be able to routinely perform work on computer for an average of 6-8 hours per day, when necessary
- Must be able to work extended hours whenever required or requested by management
- Must be capable of regular, reliable and timely attendance
- Must be able to perform job functions independently or with limited supervision and work effectively either on own or as part of a team
- Must be able to read and carry out various written instructions and follow oral instructions
- Must be able to speak clearly and deliver information in a logical and understandable sequence
- Must be capable of dealing calmly and professionally with numerous different personalities from diverse cultures at various levels within and outside of the organization
- Must be able to perform responsibilities with composure under the stress of deadlines / requirements for extreme accuracy and quality and/or fast pace
- Must be capable of exercising highest level of discretion on both internal and external confidential matters
