Job Summary
Codes and/or bills the patient’s medical record using CPT guidelines; enter billing entries and use EHR to code accurately. Communicates with physicians to obtain diagnoses, reviews coding changes and regulatory requirements, and maintains HIPAA confidentiality. Regularly reviews uncoded patient encounters to facilitate release of final bill to payors; cross-training for coverage of clinic functions; supports hospital goals and objectives.
Required Qualifications
- Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) or Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) or Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) or CCS-physician base/CCS required for wage grade
- uncertified coder is in a different category
- Previous coding experience is required
- Advanced knowledge of medical terminology with working knowledge of disease processes, anatomy, physiology and pharmacology
