Job Summary

Interpret and enforce adopted codes and regulations by patrolling assigned areas, responding to complaints regarding zoning, construction, noise, and hazardous conditions, and conducting field investigations to gather evidence and issue citations. Monitor violations of the Unified Development Code and Oil and Gas Wells statutes, draft correspondence to clarify application processes, and coordinate with police, planning, and prosecuting attorneys to prepare cases for court action. Maintain inspection logs, compile statistics, and testify in court while operating a motor vehicle and utilizing city mapping programs to organize oil and gas data.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid New Mexico driver's license with acceptable driving record for the past three years
  • Graduation from a high school or GED equivalent
  • Law enforcement, building inspection, land use, public administration or a related field, or any equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Some knowledge of code enforcement principles, practices and methods as applicable to a municipal setting
  • Working knowledge of applicable laws, standards and regulations relating to various land use, nuisance and public safety codes
  • Working knowledge of inspection techniques
  • Ability to prepare, organize and maintain field inspection data, reports and systems
  • Ability to analyze complex situations, problems and data, and use sound judgment in drawing conclusions and making decisions
  • Ability to comprehend and articulate complex facts and relationships in detail and to summarize and write clearly, concisely and legibly
  • Ability to produce or obtain reports, graphs, charts, photographs or the evidence or exhibits
  • Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, other City personnel and the public
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing
  • Ability to follow verbal and or written instructions
  • Ability to work under stress and handle stressful situations
  • Ability to meet deadlines
  • Ability to operate proficiently a personal computer, including word processing and data base software
  • Ability to operate cameras, sound level testing and recording equipment, portable gas sniffer, fire hydrant wrench, voltage tester and various other hand tools
  • Must be able to lift and/or move up to 50 lbs
