Job Summary

Assess, stabilize, and coordinate care for patients presenting with life-threatening situations, injuries, and mass casualty incidents in the emergency department. Rapidly evaluate and document the nursing process for a diverse population while managing multiple cases simultaneously with minimal supervision. Collaborate with physicians, first responders, and multidisciplinary teams to implement standing orders and handle unexpected changes in patient conditions. Supervise and delegate tasks to licensed and unlicensed staff within a skills mix environment. Maintain proficiency in emergency protocols, EMTALA regulations, and trauma care while continuously expanding clinical skills in emergency medicine.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing (BSN)
  • Minimum of one year experience
  • Active California Registered Nurse (RN) license
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification within 6 months of hire
  • Ability to speak, read and write legibly in English
  • Ability to use computer, printer and software programs necessary to the position, e.g., Word, Excel, Outlook, electronic medical record, electronic event reporting program
  • Ability to troubleshoot and calibrate patient care equipment
  • Ability to perform technical patient care activities
  • Ability to relate and communicate positively, effectively and professionally with others
  • Ability to be assertive and consistent in following and/or enforcing policies
  • Ability to think critically
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Ability to manage multiple patient assignments effectively
  • Ability to organize and prioritize workload
  • Ability to problem solve
  • Ability to recall information with accuracy
  • Ability to pay close attention to detail
  • Ability to distinguish colors and smells as necessary for patient care
  • Ability to hear sufficiently for general conversation in person and on the telephone
  • Ability to see adequately to read computer screens, medical records and written documents necessary for position
  • Ability to discern temperature variances through touch
  • Alternate Work Schedule (AWS)
  • Basic knowledge of healthcare regulations and accreditation
  • Demonstrates basic competencies in clinical nursing
  • Ability to apply theoretical concepts to clinical practice
  • Ability to continually expand knowledge base and clinical skills with a focus in emergency nursing
  • Ability to work calmly and respond courteously when under pressure
  • Ability to speak, read and write legibly in Spanish (preferred)
  • Other certifications required as listed in the department-specific Plan for Providing Care

Desired Qualifications

  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • Trauma Nursing Care Course (TNCC)
  • Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course (ENPC)
