Job Summary
Receive and prepare specimens according to standard protocols, perform laboratory tests and calculations for disease diagnosis, and execute quality control procedures to evaluate test performance. Calibrate and maintain analytical equipment, conduct phlebotomy as appropriate, and perform routine or specialized testing independently while analyzing results and troubleshooting instrument maintenance. Escalate out-of-control results with documented corrective actions, ensure regulatory compliance with accreditation standards, and manage supply inventory to support cost reduction initiatives. Adapt communication styles for patient populations and maintain confidentiality of all patient-related information.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in medical technology, medical laboratory science, clinical laboratory science, or chemical, physical or biological science
- Current license in the state of practice (if applicable)
- ASCP, AMT or AAB generalist certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist or Medical Technologist OR ASCP categorical or AAB individual discipline certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist or Medical Technologist ONLY if working in a designated Academic Medical Center facility
- Any incumbents certified by ASCP on or after January 1, 2004, must successfully complete the requirements of the ASCP's Certification Maintenance Program
- Must have computer skills and dexterity required for data entry and retrieval of patient information
- Must be proficient with Windows-style applications and keyboard
- Effective verbal and written communication skills and the ability to present information clearly and professionally to varying levels of individuals throughout the patient care process
- Good analytical and problem solving skills
- Demonstrates good judgement in performing duties and conflict resolution
- Good interpersonal skills
- Must be able to work a flexible work schedule (e.g. 24/7, weekend, holiday, on call availability)
- Must be able to stoop, bend, reach and grab with arms and hands, manual dexterity
- Must be able to stand and sit for prolonged periods of time
- Must be able to travel throughout and between facilities
