Job Summary

Receive and prepare specimens per standard protocols, perform laboratory tests and calculations for disease diagnosis and treatment, and execute quality control procedures to evaluate test performance. Calibrate and maintain analytical equipment, conduct phlebotomy as appropriate, and ensure patient confidentiality. Independently perform, analyze, and record routine and specialized laboratory testing while troubleshooting instrument maintenance and escalating out-of-control results with proper documentation. Adhere to regulatory compliance, accreditation standards, and safety guidelines regarding blood and body fluid exposure. Manage supply and reagent inventory to support cost reduction initiatives.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's in medical technology, medical laboratory science, clinical laboratory science, or chemical, physical or biological science
  • Current Clinical Lab Scientist license (generalist or specialist for hiring department) in the state of practice (if applicable)
  • Trainee permit or Lab Assistant license in the state of practice (if applicable)
  • ASCP, AMT or AAB certification (generalist or specialist for hiring department) as a Medical Laboratory Scientist or Medical Technologist
  • Computer skills and dexterity required for data entry and retrieval of patient information
  • Proficiency with Windows-style applications and keyboard
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to present information clearly and professionally to varying levels of individuals throughout the patient care process
  • Good analytical and problem solving skills
  • Good judgement in performing duties and conflict resolution
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Must be able to lift 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly
  • Ability to work in an area where patients enter
  • Ability to work directly with patients
  • Ability to work with specimens that could contain communicable diseases
  • Ability to handle exposure to blood, body fluid and tissue
  • Ability to handle exposure to hazardous medications or hazardous waste
