Job Summary

Conduct phlebotomy services, perform EKGs, and process specimens by positively identifying patients and matching aliquot tubes to sources. Execute order entry and basic patient registration functions while ensuring accuracy of all patient, specimen, and order information. Train new employees on laboratory assistant skills and monitor supply levels for replenishment. Collaborate with co-workers to provide timely collections and perform testing functions under licensed laboratory personnel direction. Adhere to safety protocols regarding bloodborne pathogens and chemical, biological, and electrical safety.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or its equivalent
  • Course work to include English
  • Course work to include typing
  • Course work to include filing
  • Course work to include general office etiquette
  • Ability to read with comprehension
  • Ability to write legibly
  • Proficiency in the use of proper grammar
  • Familiarity with hospital services and operation
  • Knowledge of general office practice
  • Ability to operate copy machine
  • Ability to operate hospital phone system
  • Ability to operate laboratory information systems
  • Ability to operate hospital information systems
  • Knowledge obtained by formal education, previous experience, or on-the-job training of proper collection techniques
  • Knowledge of proper tubes
  • Knowledge of anticoagulants or preservatives for the procurement of patients' blood specimens
  • Effective communication skills
  • Necessary computer skills to perform assigned duties
  • Critical thinking skills when assessing patients
  • Ability to determine when assistance is needed to insure quality patient care
  • Knowledge of the bio-psychosocial needs of adult, geriatric and pediatric patients
  • Special knowledge in growth and development needs of pediatric/geriatric patients where applicable
  • Previous phlebotomy experience
  • Knowledge of general office practice
