Job Summary
Perform phlebotomy and lab specimen collections per age-related standards, including venipuncture, order entry, and specimen processing via labeling, centrifuging, and packaging. Manage patient communication using the AIDET model, verify test results, and maintain accurate records while ensuring specimen stability. Monitor refrigerator temperatures, review QC/QA logs, and handle biohazard waste procedures in compliance with safety protocols. Execute lab-related clerical duties such as patient information retrieval, supply inventory management, and equipment sanitization. Work Tuesday through Friday from 11am to 4pm for 20 hours per week at a client site in Chicago's West Loop.
Required Qualifications
- High School diploma or equivalent
- Phlebotomy certification through a nationally recognized organization or training from a phlebotomy school or medical institution or one or more years of phlebotomy experience in a healthcare setting or CMA certification
- Must be able to work Tuesday through Friday 11am - 4pm
- Must demonstrate excellent customer service and communication skills
- Must have the ability to function as part of a highly effective team
- Must adhere to the organization's Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program
- Must comply with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines and all other regulatory and accreditation standards
- Must demonstrate the ability to perform venipuncture collection and specimen processing

- Must demonstrate AIDET model and optimize patient safety to reduce the likelihood of medical/health care errors
- Must be able to receive and review physician orders
- Must be able to enter accurate orders for lab tests in accordance with department policies, protocols and procedures
- Must be able to process specimens in a timely manner to ensure stability and integrity of samples including: labeling, centrifuging, aliquoting, freezing and packaging specimens for transport in accordance with established protocols and policies
- Must be able to review/record refrigerator temperature(s) and QC/QA records
- Must be able to understand the operation and maintenance of equipment pertinent to the job
- Must be able to communicate and notify Laboratory and/or Physician of problems with specimen procurement for optimal care
- Must maintain a safe work environment
- Must hold self-accountable for safe work practices
- Must adhere to biohazard waste procedures
- Must ensure proper storage and timely pickup of biohazardous waste
- Must be able to utilize email, medical record systems, handheld and desktop devices
- Must be able to order and maintain supply inventory
- Must be able to file and sanitize equipment as necessary
- Must use department's resources efficiently
- Must participate in efforts to reduce costs and streamline work processes
- Must adhere to continuing education expectations
- Must complete and sign-off on competency assessments

Desired Qualifications
- Experience performing phlebotomy on a broad range of patient's types
- Experience with processing lab specimens, transferring specimens, and handling a centrifuge
- Familiar with medical EMR systems
- Knowledge of medical terminology
