Job Summary

Special Education Paraeducator position at Crete Public Schools in Crete, Nebraska. Responsible for providing assistance to students with special needs, non-English-speaking students, and others as assigned; tutoring in reading, writing, and math; supervising students in multiple settings; enforcing district rules; observing and recording student progress; coordinating with teachers; utilizing instructional materials and technology; participating in staff meetings and duties; maintaining confidentiality and professional conduct in accordance with district policies and NDE guidelines; 185-day calendar with 7-8 hour days; requires a High School Diploma or GED plus an associate’s degree or at least two years of college or passing Project Para assessment; criminal background check required; First aid and bilingual skills preferred.

Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED and either an associate’s degree, two years of college, or a passing score on a state or local assessment (Project Para) that demonstrates their ability to assist with instruction in reading, writing, and math
  • Satisfactory completion of criminal background check
  • Work well with children and co-workers
  • First aid knowledge preferred, but not required
  • Bilingual preferred, but not required
  • Provide assistance to students with special needs, non-English-speaking students, students with physical and mental disabilities, or other students as assigned.
  • Tutor and assist children individually or in small groups to help them master assignments and to reinforce learning concepts presented by teachers.
  • Supervise students in classrooms, halls, cafeterias, school yards, and gymnasiums, or on field trips.
  • Enforce administration policies and rules governing students.
  • Observe students’ performance and record relevant data to assess progress.
  • Discuss assigned duties with classroom teachers to coordinate instructional efforts.
  • Present subject matter to students under the direction and guidance of teachers, using lectures, discussions, or supervised role-playing methods.
  • Organize and label materials and display students’ work in a manner appropriate for their eye level and perceptual skills.
  • Distribute tests and homework assignments and collect them when they are completed.
  • Use computers, audio-visual aids, and other equipment and materials to supplement presentations.
  • Attend staff meetings and serve on committees, as required.
  • Prepare lesson materials, bulletin board displays, exhibits, equipment, and demonstrations.
  • Carry out therapeutic regimens such as behavior modification and personal development programs, under the supervision of special education teachers, psychologists, speech-language pathologists or other professionals.
  • Provide disabled students with assistive devices, supportive technology, and assistance accessing facilities such as restrooms.
  • Assist in bus loading and unloading.
  • Maintain computers in classrooms and laboratories and assist students with hardware and software use.
  • Serve as a role model to all students.
  • Serve as a positive member of the community in a way that does not negatively affect the District’s reputation or image in the community.
  • Refrain from engaging in conduct that interferes with the operations of the District, including the education of students.
  • Develop and maintain a positive and professional working relationship with other staff and administration.
  • Adhere to all District policies, rules, regulations, and supervisory directives.
  • Maintain confidentiality of information concerning staff, students, and parents in accordance with law and District rules.
  • Adhere to the code of ethics of the District and the Nebraska Department of Education (NDE Rule 27).
  • FLSA Exempt Status: Non-exempt.
  • Other Responsibilities:
  • Perform other tasks or duties as assigned by the Superintendent or Principal.
  • At-Will Position:
  • This position is an “at-will” position and may be terminated, with or without cause, at any time in the sole discretion of the Superintendent or Superintendent’s designee.
  • Essential Functions:
  • The essential functions of the Paraeducator position include:
  • (1) regular, on-time, and dependable in-person attendance on the job;
  • (2) the ability to perform the identified tasks and performance responsibilities which require effective teaching and communication skills;
  • (3) the ability to perform the following identified physical requirements.
