Job Summary

Operate tractor-trailer combinations safely within DOT regulations, sorting, handling, loading, and unloading freight at service centers and customer locations. Monitor shipment locations via the Dock Yard Management System, read shipping labels, and complete forms including manifests and freight bills. Secure freight inside trailers using straps, rope, and pallets, and hand load or stack items as necessary. Transport freight continuously throughout the service center on non-forgiving surfaces while maintaining alertness for up to 11 hours. Meet customer pickup and delivery schedules, communicate with personnel via two-way radio, and perform pre-trip inspections. Pass drug and alcohol tests, satisfy medical standards, and complete orientation training.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with double/triple trailers, tanker, and hazardous material endorsements
  • Acceptable motor vehicle record
  • 12 months previous tractor-trailer driving experience
  • Graduate of a State Certified, Licensed and Safety Department approved driving school
  • Completion of the Old Dominion Truck Driver Training program (ODTDT-8/88)
  • Ability to operate hand held tablets when required
  • Good oral communications skills
  • Ability to follow instructions and take directions via two-way radio or by phone
  • Working knowledge of vehicle safety and control systems
  • Knowledge of DOT regulations governing safe driving, hours of service, inspection and maintenance and transportation of hazardous materials
  • Ability to meet or exceed the medical standards of the U.S. Department of Transportation
  • Ability to satisfactorily pass a drug test
  • Ability to satisfactorily pass an alcohol test
  • Ability to satisfactorily pass the orientation/training program instructions by an Old Dominion qualified driver trainer
  • At least 22 years of age
  • Ability to sit and remain alert while driving for an aggregate period of up to 11 hours
  • Ability to stand and walk on surfaces such as concrete, pavement, wood and metal and sometimes on slippery and wet surfaces
  • Ability to perform frequent squatting to handle, position and secure freight
  • Ability to perform frequent crouching and kneeling to handle, position and secure freight, and conduct pre-trip inspections of trucks
  • Ability to enter and exit the vehicle's cab many times a day
  • Ability to perform frequent pushing of freight weighing up to 500 pounds on a dolly or cart
  • Ability to perform occasional pushing of freight weighing more than 300 pounds with or without a mechanical aid
  • Ability to perform frequent pulling of freight weighing up to 500 pounds on a dolly or cart
  • Ability to perform occasional pulling of freight weighing more than 300 pounds with or without a mechanical aid
  • Ability to frequently perform lifting and carrying freight weighing 1 pound to 100 pounds
  • Ability to load and unload full trailers of freight weighing as much as 50,000 pounds
  • Ability to frequently reach for freight at waist level and occasionally reach for freight above shoulder height or below waist level
  • Ability to occasionally reach above shoulder level, at waist level and below waist level for maneuvering and directing the controls to operate the truck
  • Ability to install and remove tire chains when required due to inclement weather
  • Ability to use right, left or both hands to get in and out of truck, wrapping and unwrapping shrink wrap, securing and unsecuring pallets, using pallet jack or hand truck, using the steering wheel, buttons on lift gates, etc.
  • Ability to grip with right, left or both hands to use handles to get in and out of the truck, holding tablet, using pallet jacks or hand trucks, holding the steering wheel, securing straps, cardboard, airbags, etc.
  • Ability to pinch fingers on the right, left or both hands to shrink wrap, secure and unsecure straps, utilize clip boards, utilize tablets, etc.
  • Ability to hook/unhook various commercial vehicle combinations, manually lower and raise landing gear, operate the fifth wheel release lever, lock and release pintle-hooks, attach and release safety chains, open and close cargo doors, climb into and out of vehicles, fuel vehicles and check engine oil and coolant levels
  • Ability to use cognitive skills for: paying attention to surroundings, including traffic, truck inspections, freight, gates, etc.
  • Ability to use long-term and short-term memory for inspecting areas, breaking down pallets, carrying products, driving in traffic and for safety logic and reasoning in reading manifests, tablets, navigation, road signs, reading boxes and order numbers
  • Ability to use auditory and visual processing to inspect trucks, driving, reading, listening for horns and/or other traffic and speaking with customers
  • Ability to shift manual transmission and operate foot pedals
  • Ability to satisfactorily pass any physical testing requirements which is consistent with the job requirements discussed above
  • Ability to read, write and speak English
