Job Summary
Claims Examiner II analyzes and investigates coverage for pre-litigation claims under applicable employment practices liability or professional liability policies. Responsibilities include reviewing claims for coverage, investigating and drafting coverage determinations, drafting action plans, and obtaining approvals from Claims Managers; independently handling moderately complex coverage issues; establishing and revising claim reserves within authority; drafting timely coverage determination letters (including reservation of rights and denial letters); appointing defense or coverage counsel and obtaining updates; maintaining claim files and diary, communicating with insureds, defense/counsel, and agents; authorizing settlements within authority; reviewing and processing invoices and settlements; attending mediations/arbitrations as needed; and staying informed on changes in industry practices. The role requires strong communication, analytical, and organizational skills, and the ability to manage multiple tasks in a hybrid New York-based environment.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum of two years of relevant and progressive professional experience as a Claims Examiner
- Possess and have ability to apply knowledge of principles, practices, and procedures related to claims handling
- Experience with reviewing claims for coverage and determining applicability under applicable policy forms
- Ability to draft coverage determinations, action plans, and letters (reservation of rights, denial)
- Ability to appoint defense/coverage counsel and obtain updates from counsel and insured
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with confidentiality and diplomacy
- Advanced organizational and analytical skills; ability to manage multiple tasks
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Access) or equivalent
