Job Summary
Produce new drawings from previous projects and standards, including high-voltage substation layouts, elevation drawings, conduit, and grounding plans. Calculate cable lengths, conduit fill, structure heights, and concrete volumes using task-specific software. Create substation bills of materials with manufacturer part numbers and quantities. Oversee project-specific activities of drafters and junior designers while researching catalogs and corporate standards. Take personal responsibility for work quality and accuracy, bringing potential problems and solutions to management. Complete work within pre-defined times to meet proposal and project schedules. This role requires a minimum of five years in structural substation design, AutoCAD proficiency, and knowledge of AISC and ACI codes. Candidates must be able to endure prolonged desk work, travel 10% for trainings, and work extended hours including weekends. Based in Austin, Texas, this position reports to a Supervising Engineer.
Required Qualifications
- A minimum of five years of experience in structural substation design, or related experience
- Associate's Degree in Drafting & Design
- Experience with AutoCAD 2010 or newer
- Experience in structural drafting of steel structures and concrete foundations
- Knowledge of the types of drawings required for foundation and steel construction
- Basic knowledge of civil/structural codes and standards including AISC and ACI
- Mathematics, including algebra and basic trigonometry
- Extensive knowledge of CAD programs such as AutoCAD
- Demonstrated knowledge of Microsoft Office products including Word, Excel, and Outlook
- Demonstrated oral and written communication skills to effectively convey information to team members, management, and clients
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment
- Valid driver's license
- Must maintain an acceptable driving record throughout employment
- Must be able to endure prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer for a minimum of 8 hours a day
- Must be able and willing to travel overnight for trainings and/or meetings as required (10%)
- Working extended hours, including weekends, may be required periodically
- Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds at a time
- Candidates must be at least 18 years of age
- Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States on a permanent basis without current or future visa sponsorship
Desired Qualifications
- Experience with Microstation V8 and V8i
- Knowledge of the major components of a substation
- Strong knowledge of civil/structural codes and standards including NESC, IEEE, ANSI, AISC, and ACI
