Job Summary

Coordinate and administer the City Street Tree Program by planning work, assigning crews and equipment for planting and maintaining public trees, and instructing crew leaders. Inspect trees for removal permits to ensure replanting requirements are met, supervise subordinates, and review roadway plans for ecosystem preservation recommendations. Administer the City Tree Ordinance, oversee the Tree Mitigation Fund, and update the Urban Forest Ecological Analysis on a five-year schedule. Receive public complaints regarding trees, assign crews for repairs, and perform code enforcement inspections for single-family home shade trees. Prepare reports reflecting progress costs and authorize purchase orders for supplies and equipment.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor degree from an accredited four-year (4-year) college or university with major course work in Urban Forestry, Horticulture, Botany, or related subject
  • three (3) years experience in urban forestry and horticulture including urban forestry operations and tree and landscaping maintenance
  • supervisory experience
  • Valid Driver License
  • Valid Florida Driver License
  • Certified Arborist by the International Society of Arboriculture
  • Thorough knowledge of arboricultural practices and procedures
  • Thorough knowledge of the intent and needs of a Street Tree Program
  • Thorough knowledge of Florida's trees, shrubs, flowers, ornamental plants, and other plant life
  • Knowledge and competence in forest management, silviculture, reforestation, watershed management, botany, plant physiology, entomology, landscape design, pathology, and plant and tree anatomy
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions necessary in arboriculture
  • Knowledge of governmental budget procedures
  • Knowledge of computers and relevant software
  • Knowledge of City laws and ordinances relating to trees
  • Skill in managing the program and operations of a Street Tree Division including personnel and financial management
  • Skill in establishing goals and objectives and developing comprehensive plans
  • Ability to work effectively with elected officials, charter officers, department heads, representatives of other agencies, other city employees, and the general public
  • Ability to keep records and prepare reports
  • Ability to deal effectively and tactfully with public relations problems
  • Ability to plan, schedule, organize, supervise, counsel and discipline subordinates effectively
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
  • Attends work on a continuous and regular basis
  • Must possess certain physical abilities and be able to withstand work related environmental conditions
