Job Summary
Provide comprehensive services to minimize the negative impact of trauma, illness, and hospitalization by addressing the emotional, cognitive, and developmental needs of pediatric patients and families. Offer developmentally appropriate preparation, education, and individualized therapeutic interventions while normalizing the environment to reduce healthcare stress. Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to support a family-centered care approach and provide legacy and bereavement support as needed. Participate in program development for the assigned clinical area and contribute to unit meetings, patient care rounding, and staff meetings. Maintain updated patient documentation and adhere to infection control policies. Work 36 hours across day and evening shifts (11:00 am–8:30 pm) in the Pediatric Emergency Department at Boston Medical Center.
Required Qualifications
- Baccalaureate degree in child life or a closely related field
- Completion of a child life internship (600 hours) under the direct supervision of a certified child life specialist
- Prior work experience in a medical setting as a child life specialist
- Certification as a child life specialist
- Certification as a child life specialist within 6 months of hire
- Ability to prioritize
- Take initiative
- Exhibit emotional maturity
- Be self-motivated
- Adherence to infection control policies set forth by the institution
- Must be vaccinated against COVID-19
- Must receive a booster dose of the COVID-19 vaccine
- Must be vaccinated against flu
- Must complete a background check
