Job Summary

Launch and lead a brand-new public defender's office for Victoria, Jackson, Refugio, Lavaca, and Goliad counties. Establish a culture of client-centered advocacy by creating gold-standard processes, monitoring attorney caseloads during ramp-up, and effectively communicating with local stakeholders. Mentor newly licensed attorneys through file reviews, training development, and serving as lead counsel on trials. Assist in tracking impact data including jail population and disposition metrics while implementing key strategies to achieve organizational goals. Maintain a supportive work environment and contribute to the broader development of Texas RioGrande Public Defender.

Required Qualifications

  • Licensed to practice law in Texas or willing to take the next available Texas bar exam
  • At least five years of criminal litigation experience as a licensed attorney
  • At least 5 trials before a jury as lead counsel
  • Demonstrated management and leadership skills
  • Proficiency in Office365, legal research software, and other case management systems

Desired Qualifications

  • Professional fluency in Spanish (highly preferred)
  • Vision for advancing justice
  • Commitment to indigent defense and criminal justice reform
  • Experience working in a public defender office
  • Exceptional advocacy, management, and leadership skills
  • Solution oriented and creative in their ideas on how to solve systemic issues within the criminal justice system
  • Passion about the development and training of the new generation of the indigent defense attorneys
  • Want to live and work in communities where TRGPD clients have the greatest needs
