Job Summary
Chief Operating Engineer responsible for safe, efficient operation of Acadia University’s Central Heating Plant and Refrigeration Plant; lead teams of CHP Operators and Maintenance Relief Operators; ensure regulatory compliance and energy efficiency; develop SOPs, maintenance programs, and operational reports; manage budgets and capital planning; coordinate contractors and service providers; promote safety and continuous improvement on campus. Requires 2nd Class Power Engineer’s Certificate (Nova Scotia) and 5+ years in industrial utility operation with supervisory experience; strong knowledge of steam/refrigeration systems, energy management, and CMMS tools; able to navigate collective agreements and safety protocols.
Required Qualifications
- Valid 2nd Class Power Engineer’s Certificate of Qualification for Nova Scotia (or interprovincial equivalent recognized in Canada)
- Minimum 5 years of progressive experience operating and maintaining central heating plants, refrigeration plants, or similar industrial utility systems
- Experience supervising or leading in a unionized environment is considered a strong asset
- Experience interpreting and applying Collective Agreements, workplace policies, and regulatory requirements
- Strong knowledge of steam generation, refrigeration systems, energy management, preventative maintenance, and plant operations
- Proficiency with CMMS and Microsoft Office 365; knowledge of Maximo, Keystone Work Order System, UKG, and IMS Safety Database is considered an asset
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; ability to build relationships with clients, employees, contractors, and stakeholders

- Ability to work in dynamic environments and respond to operational emergencies
- Experience preparing budgets, forecasts, operational reports, and capital improvement recommendations
