Job Summary
Chief of Staff for the New York City Department of Veterans Services reports to the Commissioner and serves on the Leadership Team. The role provides strategic and operational guidance, coordinates cross-agency initiatives, and oversees staff functions to improve efficiency and deliver better outcomes for DVS clients and providers. Responsibilities include developing and monitoring short- and medium-term strategies, building a high-integrity and high-value organization, scaling project management practices for high-profile initiatives, institutionalizing responsible management functions and business process innovations, fostering a culture of accountability and continuous improvement, analyzing staffing trends to reduce turnover, refining agency doctrine and policy, managing legislative affairs and public/intergovernmental matters, and representing the Commissioner at meetings. The ideal candidate has a bachelor’s degree (master’s preferred), at least 10 years of executive/managerial experience in relevant fields, strong communication and policy-analysis skills, and a commitment to public service with veteran advocacy experience as a plus.
Required Qualifications
- Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college is required; graduate degree in business administration, public policy, urban planning and/or law is preferred.
- Minimum of 10 years full-time executive and managerial experience in operations research and analysis; policy advocacy, business administration, public policy, urban planning/development and/or law; supervisory experience leading individuals and organizational teams is an absolute requirement.
- Demonstrated proficiency with personnel conflict resolution; superb written and verbal communication; analyzing policy actions/impact; building cohesive mission-focused teams.
- Proven ability to advocate for NYC veterans and families; veteran status is a plus.
