Job Summary
The Chief of Police leads the Bear River Band of the Rohnerville Rancheria Police Department, overseeing tribal law enforcement operations and community safety within tribal jurisdiction. Responsibilities include developing and implementing department policies aligned with tribal sovereignty, managing budgets and resources, coordinating with tribal, state, and federal agencies, directing and mentoring officers in culturally competent policing, conducting investigations and court-security duties, participating in community outreach and crime-prevention efforts, and ensuring compliance with applicable tribal codes, federal laws, and interagency agreements. The role requires strong leadership, strategic policy development, interagency collaboration, and the ability to supervise all department personnel while upholding restorative justice and trauma-informed practices.
Required Qualifications
- Must be twenty-one (21) years of age.
- Must have High School diploma or its equivalent.
- Must have a Bachelor’s degree in: Criminal Justice, Public Administration, or related field.
- Equivalent combination of education and experience (Equivalent = two years direct experience to one year of education).
- Must have 5 years of related experience in Law Enforcement.
- Must have 2 years of supervisory experience within a Police Department or similar department.
- Shall possess a valid driver's license and be insurable by agencies insurance.
- Must pass a pre-employment drug test and physical.
- Must provide or obtain CPR & First Aid certification within three (3) months of hire.
- Must have valid JOB RELATED Certification or License: Current California Peace Officer Standards and Training Certification (POST).
- Must be able to work extended hours when necessary.
Additional Requirements
- Must be able to work all shifts, weekends, holidays & special events as needed.
