Job Summary
Lead the Chief Movement Building & Member Engagement department, overseeing three core units of Events, Mobilization, and Grassroots Leadership & Engagement to accelerate growth and mobilize the organization's one million-member grassroots base. Develop and socialize a long-term vision for member engagement, translating strategic goals into concrete operational plans with unit-level targets, accountable timelines, and regular progress reviews. Serve as the connective hub across the organization, bridging movement building with development, strategy, impact, and operations while representing member goals to the Executive Team and Board. Architect and steward a comprehensive activist engagement strategy spanning digital acquisition, multiple participation on-ramps, and pathways to sustained local activism, ensuring the diversification and retention of the activist base. Manage a team of approximately 25 staff, fostering a culture of trust, accountability, and innovation while navigating complex, politically ambiguous environments to advance AIUSA's human rights mission.
Required Qualifications
- Executive-level experience in a complex, mission-driven organization
- Demonstrated ability to develop and socialize a bold vision for people power and movement building
- Clear track record of closing the gap between strategic vision and execution
- Strong cross-departmental partnership instincts
- Systems thinker with the ability to manage multiple workstreams and time horizons simultaneously
- Comfort making decisive, values-driven calls in ambiguous or politically complex environments
- Demonstrated ability to embed inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility (IDEA) into strategy, operations, and culture
- Deep, demonstrated commitment to grassroots organizing and people power especially in the United States
- Direct experience with a range of activism tactics, from engaging elected representatives to community organizing to direct action
- Clear-eyed understanding of people power's role in this political moment
- Proven track record of growing and diversifying a member, activist, or constituent base at meaningful scale
- Sector background in civil rights, human rights, social justice, labor, climate, or civic engagement
- Fluency in digital organizing and the current landscape of how people mobilize across platforms and channels
- Comfort with activist databases and data-informed decision-making
- Familiarity with the full arc of member and activist development, from first contact to self-directed leadership
- Experience leading within or alongside a chapter-based, federated, or deep-volunteer membership organization
- Sophisticated understanding of the staff-volunteer dynamic
- Track record of establishing productive boundaries and norms without undermining member ownership or agency
- Comfort navigating and stewarding a complex, member-driven governance environment
- Ability to engage diverse perspectives with patience, clarity, and strategic perspective
- Experience developing and sustaining member leader pipelines
- Demonstrated ability to engage and retain members across a wide range of ages, backgrounds, and levels of prior involvement
- Demonstrated experience leading people-centered organizational change, including building trust
