Job Summary
The Chief Financial Officer leads the nonprofit’s financial strategy and operations as a key member of the Executive Leadership Team. Oversees financial operations across the organization and affiliates with responsibilities for regulatory compliance, financial integrity, and scalable administrative processes. Manages budgeting, forecasting, and multi‐entity financial planning; supervises the finance team (including Controller and Accounting Manager); ensures timely preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements for the CEO, Board, and external stakeholders; drives internal controls, risk management, audits, and grant compliance; and partners with leadership to align financial planning with programmatic goals and mission-driven growth. Proficiency with fund accounting, government grants, and complex regulatory frameworks, plus experience with nonprofit IT and financial systems such as Blackbaud Accounting and Yardi Breeze, are essential for strategic oversight and sustainable operations.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required
- CPA designation required
- Non-profit accounting: 4 years (Required)
- Minimum of 10 years of progressive financial leadership, including at least 5 years in a senior executive role within mid-to-large scale nonprofit organizations
- Deep expertise in nonprofit finance, including fund accounting, government grants, multi-stream funding, and complex regulatory and compliance frameworks
- Proven track record of strategic financial oversight
- Experience directing audits, tax compliance, and financial reporting, including affordable housing or similar community-focused programs
- Experience leveraging financial and operational systems (e.g., Blackbaud Accounting and Yardi Breeze)
- Strong stakeholder management with boards, executives, funders, and external partners
- Bachelor’s degree and CPA; MBA strongly preferred
