Job Summary
Lead fun, interactive chess classes for 10–15 energetic elementary students using a structured curriculum to teach fundamentals, sportsmanship, and problem-solving skills. Manage a lively classroom with confidence while following school safety protocols during arrival, dismissal, and in-class activities. Travel to various local school sites in Austin, TX, arriving prepared to engage students between 2:00 PM and 5:00 PM. Teach a minimum of one to five classes per week, with specific numbers based on local school availability. Complete a required application questionnaire detailing relevant experience working with children and chess qualifications.
Required Qualifications
- Experience working with groups of children (teaching, tutoring, coaching, camp counseling, or similar)
- Comfort leading a class independently and creating interactive, friendly, and fun sessions
- Professional, positive, and kid-friendly demeanor
- Genuine desire to be a positive role model and promote good sportsmanship
- Strong grasp of chess fundamentals
- Ability to connect chess problem-solving to real-life problem-solving
- Reliable personal transportation and the ability to drive between locations
- Availability on weekday afternoons, with class start times falling within the 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM window, to teach 1–5 classes per week
- Commitment to implementing school safety protocols to protect students' well-being
- Strong punctuality and time-management skills
- Currently residing in Austin, TX or be willing to relocate at their own expense
