Job Summary

Plan, organize, and present Cherokee Language and Culture instruction to support student educational and social development. Manage instructional time and student behavior while promoting cultural awareness and pride in Cherokee traditions. Develop a mentoring program to track academic progress and coordinate weekly forums with tribal members to identify at-risk behaviors and set goals. Collaborate with the Swain High Careteam and EBCI Education Office to facilitate cultural activities and track student progress through Impact Aid and 504 forms. Maintain confidentiality and basic records while communicating effectively with students, colleagues, and stakeholders.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Residency License in Foreign Language Education: Cherokee with the NC Department of Public Instruction
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing
  • Ability to establish positive relationships with students & colleagues
  • Ability to develop, facilitate, and coordinate with others to promote the successful delivery of curriculum essential to job goals and objectives
  • Ability to promote positive relationships with all stakeholders and benefactors
  • Ability to perform under stress, deal with persons acting under stress and adapt when confronted with emergency situations
  • Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality
  • Ability to maintain basic files and records
  • Must be able to use a variety of equipment and classroom tools such as computers, copiers, typewriters, calculators, pencils, scissors, equipment for children with special needs
  • Ability to exert a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects
  • Ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, structural, or composite characteristics of data, people or things
  • Ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information
  • Ability to read a variety of correspondence, reports, handbooks, forms, lists
  • Ability to prepare correspondence, simple reports, forms, instructional materials, etc., using prescribed format
