Job Summary
Scrub for surgical cases, manage the surgical field, and handle instruments, supplies, and medication. Maintain inventory, differentiate sterilization methods, and select equipment as required. Adhere to asepsis and safety standards while assisting with patient care problems within scope. Participate in product and supply evaluation, assist in training students, and support the leadership team if designated as OR Tech III. Assume call duties as scheduled or rotate to the hospital for competency assurance. Communicate with patients and coworkers to protect privacy and maintain confidentiality.
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED
- Successful completion of a nationally accredited education program for surgical technologists and holds and maintains a certified surgical technologist credential administered by a nationally accredited surgical technologist credentialing organization
- Has completed an appropriate training program for surgical technology in the United States Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, or Public Health Service Commissioned Corps
- Provides evidence of employment as a surgical technologist in a healthcare facility for a cumulative period of one year, occurring between 2011 and 2015
- Is in the service of the federal government, to the extent the person is performing duties related to a Surgical technologist
- Received education in an accredited program for licensed practical nursing
- Licensed by New York State as an LPN (Licensed Practical Nurse)
- Must obtain Surgical Technologist certification within 1 year from date of graduation and date of hire
- Must obtain BLS certification within 6 months from date of hire
- Medium Work - Exerting up to 50 lbs. for force occasionally, and/or up to 20 lbs. of force frequently, and/or up to 10 lbs. of force constantly to move objects
- Occasional crouching, hearing
- Frequent kneeling, lifting, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, seeing/monitor/computer use, stooping, talking, visual acuity (color, depth, perception), walking, fit testing
- Constant typing/clerical/dexterity, grasping, standing
- Must be able to handle the instrumentation safely with special attention to counts and personal safety
- Must be able to differentiate sterilization methods required for specific instruments and equipment
- Must be able to maintain an orderly, clean, and safe work environment and personal appearance
- Must be able to communicate with patients and coworkers using means to protect patient privacy and maintain confidentiality
- Must be able to adhere to hospital policies with particular attention to protect patient rights and confidentiality
- Must be able to assume call duties as scheduled for staff that are assigned to the Main Campus
- For those at the Regional ASCs and choose not to pull call, accepts periodic rotation to the Hospital to assure competency
