Job Summary
Certified Surgical Assistant position at Sentara Obici Hospital in Suffolk, VA. Under direct supervision of the attending surgeon, serves as 1st or 2nd assistant to support multidisciplinary surgical teams before, during, and after procedures. Key duties include intraoperative assistance (tissue retraction, visualizing the operative site, controlling bleeding, applying dressings), surgical suturing, patient positioning and equipment setup, medication administration as directed, pre- and post-operative care, and adherence to infection-control and hospital policies to maintain a sterile OR environment. Requires graduation from an accredited Surgical Assistant program, CSFA or CSA certification, Virginia Surgical Assistant License, and BLS certification. On-call availability within 30 minutes of the hospital. Equal Opportunity Employer.
Required Qualifications
- Education: Graduate of an accredited Surgical Assistant program.
- Certification: Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA) through the NBSTSA OR Certified Surgical Assistant (CSA) through the NCCSA.
- Licensure: Valid Virginia Surgical Assistant License.
- Life Support: Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association (AHA).
- Experience: Minimum of 1 year of Operating Room experience preferred, though new graduates may apply for entry-level tiers.
