Job Summary
The Certified Professional Coder, HIM assigns ICD-10-CM/PCS, CPT, and HCPCS codes for patient encounters, ensures accurate DRG/APC classification, and collaborates with providers to resolve coding questions. Responsibilities include abstracting information from records, ensuring documentation supports services and medical necessity, auditing for compliance with coding guidelines and DRH policies, and maintaining ongoing coding education. The role emphasizes accuracy, confidentiality of records, and interaction with CDI and billing teams; there is optional remote work on a scheduled basis after onsite training. The position requires strong communication, attention to detail, and the ability to adapt to evolving coding guidelines.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Associate or bachelor’s degree in Health Information Management is preferred
- Previous work experience as a coder or strong training background in coding and reimbursement required
- Prefer at least 3 years of experience in DRG and/or APC assignment
- Certification in: RHIA, RHIT, CCA, CCS, CPC, CIC, COC (may have up to 12 months to obtain after date of hire or transfer)
